Plumbing

Plumbing covers the systems that bring water into a home, carry waste out, and deliver hot water and gas to fixtures and appliances. Most homeowner questions fall into the four topics below.

Topics

• Water heaters — A water heater is one of the largest and most expensive home systems to replace.
• Drains and sewer — Drain problems range from a slow sink to a sewer backup.
• Leaks and water supply — Supply problems include leaks, low pressure, and unexpected water bills.
• Fixtures and faucets — Faucets, toilets, and showers are among the most frequently repaired plumbing parts, and many repairs are within reach of a homeowner.

Before you hire

Confirm the contractor holds the license your state or city requires, carries liability and workers' compensation insurance, and pulls permits for work that needs them. Get written estimates that spell out materials, labor, and warranties.
