Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material in the United States. Their life depends on the product, climate, attic ventilation, installation quality, and maintenance, so check the warranty and the installer's recommendation for your home.

Quick facts
QuestionShort answer
How long do they last?Life depends on the product, climate, and ventilation. The sources reviewed for this page did not give a verified lifespan range, so rely on the manufacturer's warranty and a local installer's experience.
What signs mean replacement?Curling, cracking, missing shingles, bare spots from granule loss, leaks, and daylight or damp insulation in the attic.
What does it cost?Angi lists a national average of about $10,500 for a full shingle roof (2026). Per-square prices vary by product and region, so get a local quote.
When do I need a pro?Any roof replacement, repair involving the deck or flashing, and any work on steep or high roofs.

How it works

Shingles overlap in rows over an underlayment and the roof deck, shedding water downslope. Flashing seals valleys, walls, and penetrations. Ventilation at the eaves and ridge moves heat and moisture out of the attic, which protects the shingles from heat and condensation.

Types and ratings

Ratings to know
RatingWhat it measuresClasses or notes
ASTM D3161 (wind)Fan-induced wind resistance of shinglesClasses A, D, and F, tested to 60, 90, and 110 mph (VASD)
ASTM D7158 (wind uplift)Uplift resistance for self-sealing shinglesClasses D, G, and H. The IBC and IRC require D7158 classification for self-sealing shingles. Speed values differ by source, so check the product label.
UL 2218 (impact)Resistance to steel-ball impacts simulating hailClasses 1 through 4; Class 4 is the most impact resistant
ENERGY STAR cool roofSolar reflectance for cooling savingsAsphalt shingles need coated, cool-rated granules to qualify. Coating existing shingles usually does not count.

Research indicates wind and hail performance can decline as shingles age, and few products reach the top class in every category. Ask the installer for the ratings of the product you buy.

Ventilation

The IRC's attic ventilation rule sets a base of 1 square foot of net free vent area per 150 square feet of attic space. The 1 to 300 ratio applies only when two conditions are met: in Climate Zones 6, 7, and 8, a Class I or II vapor retarder is on the warm-in-winter side of the ceiling; and 40 to 50 percent of the vent area is high ventilation no more than 3 feet below the ridge. The conditions differ between code editions, so confirm the rule that applies where you live.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install new shingles over old ones?

Sometimes, if the code and the manufacturer allow one additional layer. Many jurisdictions limit the layers, and tear-off is often better for an old or damaged deck. Ask your installer and the building department.

Do impact-rated shingles lower insurance premiums?

Some insurers offer discounts for impact-rated roofs. Check with your insurer before buying.
