Gutters and flashing manage water at the roof edges and at penetrations. They are small parts with a large effect on water damage around the home, and they are often the first place a leak shows up.

Quick facts
QuestionShort answer
What do gutters do?They collect runoff from the roof edge and send it through downspouts away from the foundation.
What does flashing do?It directs water over joints where the roof meets walls, chimneys, valleys, and vents.
What does it cost?2026 guides put installed gutters at about $6 to $12 per linear foot. Vinyl is lower and copper about $20 to $40 per foot. Leaf guards add about $3 to $8 per foot.
When do I need a pro?Flashing repairs at chimneys, valleys, and walls, gutter replacement, and any water inside the structure.

How it works

Gutters catch runoff along the eave. Downspouts carry that water to splash blocks, extensions, or underground drains. Flashing is metal or membrane material set under and over roof joints so water runs out rather than in.

Types

Gutter and flashing types
TypeNotesTradeoffs
Vinyl guttersLightweight, low costCan crack in cold weather and sag over time
Aluminum guttersCommon, lightweight, and corrosion resistantCan dent; needs proper hangers
Steel or copper guttersSteel is strong; copper is premium and durableHigher cost; copper is priced well above other options
Leaf guardsScreens or covers over the gutterAdd cost; still need occasional cleaning
Step and counter flashingLayered metal at walls and chimneysCorrect layering matters more than the metal type

Frequently asked questions

Do gutter guards stop all clogging?

No. Guards reduce debris, but they still need occasional cleaning, and some let fine debris through.

How far should downspouts discharge from the foundation?

Direct water several feet away from the foundation. Many jurisdictions set a minimum, so check local rules.
